What All I Need to Get Started?
You do not need a website or developer to get started.
You will need:
- A PayU merchant account: Sign up here if you do not have an account.
- Access to the PayU Dashboard: Where you will create and manage your payment links.
- Customer contact details: Required details such as a phone number, email address, or WhatsApp contact.
- Payment details: Such as the amount, purpose, and any additional information you want to collect.
How do I Create a Payment Link?
1. Open Payment Links
Log in to the PayU Dashboard and go to Payment Tools > Payment Links.
2. Click Create New Payment Link
Click Create New Payment Link in the top-right corner. Enter the Amount and a brief Purpose description (for example, "Invoice #1042 — Web Design Services").
Payment Link PreviewAs you fill in the form, a live preview of the pre-payment page updates in real time, so you can see exactly what your customer will see before the link goes live.
3. Set customer details and expiry (optional)
Add the customer's email or phone number and toggle Notify via SMS/Email on. PayU will send the link automatically when you create it. You can also set an expiry date (default is 1 year).
4. Create and send
Click Create and Send Payment Link. The link is created instantly. If you enabled notifications, it goes to the customer right away. Otherwise, copy the URL from your Dashboard and share it manually.
Refer to the Create a Payment Link for full walkthrough with screenshots.
You can create payment links one at a time, or upload multiple links at once if you need to send payment requests to many customers.
Other Ways to Create Payment Links:
- Create links programmatically via REST API: Payment Links API
- Send a Pay Now button natively inside WhatsApp: Enhanced Payment Links (EPL)
Is My Payment Link Secure?
Yes. Every Payment Link is served over HTTPS on PayU's PCI-DSS compliant hosted payment page. Your customer's card and UPI details never pass through your system. You do not configure anything; PayU handles it.
You control additional fraud exposure through two settings available at link creation:
- Expiry date: the link stops accepting payments after the date you set.
- Single-use: the link closes after the first successful payment, even if shared multiple times.
Webhook signature verification for Payment Links uses your client_secret. Using the wrong secret will cause every hash check to fail silently. See Webhooks for the correct formula and code examples.
How does My Customer Pay?
When your customer receives the payment link:
1. Opens the link
Clicks the URL you sent them
Sees the payment details
Amount, purpose, and any message you included
Fills in any required information (optional)
If you have set up a form to collect details like name, or delivery address
Chooses payment method
UPI, cards, net banking, or wallets
Completes payment
enters payment details and confirms
Receives confirmation
sees a success or failure message
Your customer does not need a PayU account or any special app. The link works in any browser.
How do I Manage Payments?
Once your customer completes the payment:
Filter and search
View links by status such as Active, Paid, Expired, or Deactivated, or narrow by creation date. Use the calendar picker to set a custom date range.
Edit a link
Open a link's Detail view and click Edit to update the amount, expiry date, partial payment settings, or customer details after the link has been created.
Duplicate a link
Create a new link pre-filled with the same settings such as amount, purpose, and options. Use it to reuse a configuration, correct a mistake, or send the same request to a different customer.
Whether a link can be reused for multiple payments depends on how you configured it at creation. Specifically the Max Transactions Allowed and Single-use settings. A link with no transaction cap accepts payments until it expires or is deactivated.
Resend a link
Share any Active link again via SMS, email, or by copying the URL and sending it over WhatsApp or any channel withiut any limit on how many times you can resend.
Export records
Download your payment link history as CSV or Excel with either a link-level summary or a transaction-level detail report for reconciliation or reporting.
Deactivate a link
When a link is no longer needed, stop it from accepting further payments, either from the Dashboard or via the Deactivate API. To re-activate a deactivated or expired link, use the same API with active: true.
Refer to the Manage Payment Links page for more information.
Use AI to Help You
You can manage Payment Links by conversation instead of navigating the Dashboard. Use PayU Ask AI or paste these prompts directly into Claude, ChatGPT, or any AI assistant:
